Bradley Sowash

Focus On Jazz is specifically designed for traditional studio piano teachers who have little or no experience with jazz, blues, or popular music but would like to integrate these styles into their playing and teaching. Led by renowned jazz pianist Bradley Sowash, this workshop is also open to non-teaching pianists of at least intermediate ability. Through lecture, demonstration, written example, and hands-on experience, participants will learn to play and teach an approach to music making involving personal expression, improvisation and the applied knowledge of chords, scales and rhythms in just 5 - 10 minutes of the weekly lesson time.

Bradley's Bio:

An accomplished composer, educator, critically-acclaimed recording artist of seven CDs, and concert jazz pianist, Bradley Sowash has delighted listeners of all ages in concert halls and churches throughout the United States and Europe for over two decades. His emotional style and formidable technique have prompted favorable reviews in national publications including The Village Voice's comment that "Sowash's music powerfully conjures the moods." Known for his instant audience rapport, Billboard Magazine declared "He can really move an audience along with zest and wit." His music has received national airplay including on NPR's "Morning Edition." Mr. Sowash continues to be a regular guest on the PBS series, "The Piano Guy," and has recently collaborated with host, Scott Houston on an instructional book to be titled, Play Piano In A Flash: The Next Step. Other publications by Sowash include several volumes of jazz hymn arrangements published by Augsburg Fortress Press and "That's Jazz," a three volume piano method published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company.

A well-regarded educator, Sowash's frequent appearances as a visiting artist to schools throughout the state have enriched the lives of hundreds of children. He is the director of The Jazz Workshop, a division of Columbus, Ohio's Chamber Music Connection, in which student jazz combos receive weekly coaching by professional jazz musicians. He also maintains a private studio with students ranging from age 9 to 57 and teaches daily in the Ohio State University Department of Dance.
